In 1927, during Prohibition, one movie studio is under attack by moralists at the Hays Office, determined to cleanse the silver screen of indecency, sin and corruption. But the studio is already in crisis. Its matinee idol will fail his voice test because of his stutter and the bankers are threatening to foreclose. It is left to Gene, the studio tea boy, to save the day by developing a new technique of miming to playback. He is quickly hailed as the new boy wonder and his meteoric career begins.
