The author Jean Genet wrote and directed his one and only short film, Un Chant D'amour using a cast plucked from his associates and male lovers from Paris streets. Set in a French prison, the film examines intense homosexual desire. Banned for many years it became a cause célèbre for gay rights campaigners as well as being a masterpiece of poetic film-making.
